Army Casualty
The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting
Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Sgt. Edward W. Shaffer, 23, of Mont Alto, Pa., died Dec. 27 at Fort Sam
Houston, Texas, of injuries sustained on Nov. 13 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when an improvised
explosive device detonated nearby. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Marine who was supporting
Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Lance Cpl. Joshua C. Alonzo, 21, of Dumas, Texas, died November 22 while
conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd
Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force,
Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
