A Window To A Life 2002

I'll be 58 on Saturday, December 21, 2002.
When I think about having lived 58 years, I think about the future, NOT the past. I
envision ways to apply my 58 years of life experience and knowledge to enhance my life.
High on my list of priorities this year is to plant a large vegetable garden in the
spring. The garden will be approximately one acre and will feed two families throughout
next winter.
Planting a large garden requires planning and nurturing, and therein lies the fun. I
learned how to plan and plant a large garden in 1982.
First you draw the garden on paper determining the lay of the land, the sun's direction,
the irrigation needed, the crops that will benefit from being rowed together and how far
apart the rows will be. Then you set the stakes and run the string to ensure the rows are
straight.
I'll select the best grade of seed and begin planting as the sun starts to warm the earth
where I live.
Wild birds, and other creatures love to feed on a growing garden so I have to plant some
food for them as well. Birds love sunflowers so I will plant ten sunflower plants for
them.
Rabbits love to burrow in the planted rows. When weeding the garden after it has been
planted, I'll have to watch out that I don't harm the baby rabbits.
Also deer love to feed on a garden. Erecting an 8 foot (nay, better make it 10) wire fence
is essential if I hope to harvest anything. Deer can jump a tall fence so keeping a
watchful eye on the garden is the best course of action.
This year's garden will have tomatoes, green onions, yellow corn, okra, pole beans,
cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, squash, and new potatoes.
Also, I'm going to plant some strawberry beds and pear trees.
The garden will keep me busy, on my feet, off the computer, and my freezer full of good
eating. And that food and life enhancing activity will tide me over to my next birthday.
